Ludwe Mgolombane’s work is deeply rooted in Humanity and in the past few years has been particularly focused on his origins. In his last collection the artist explored the theme of childhood and found inspiration in familiar games played on the rolling hills of the Eastern Cape. Those vivid memories gave birth to a figurative collection of sculptures, and it was natural that Mgolombane’s exploration would deepen his research into his heritage.
As he is exploring his lineage and the meaning of self, the shape of his work in becoming less tangible, taking on many shapes and colours as his discoveries unfold. Staying faithful to his original technique which consists in mixing clay and natural combustible to give his pieces his signature texture, he is also bringing various oxides, oozing glazes, and metal pieces. Deep scars have appeared on his work, symbolising the proud marks of history that passed, they also speak of our shadows and the importance to let them resurface in the process of healing, grounding, or when we seek wholeness.
His current series is mirroring his own personal search for meaning through exploration of the meanders of his past and is leading towards an exciting and important body of work that will further travel up the family tree beyond his lifetime in a quest to meet with his ancestors.
