This painting documents a random encounter with a ram in Sutherland. Fields of frolicking ewes and lambs are a common sight in South Africa. The irony of this idyllic image is the destiny of most lambs to land on our tables. As I'd never encountered one before, the ram made me wonder about the sex of most of the lambs I've eaten, because it would make sense to keep most females alive due to their ability to reproduce, leaving the occasional male specimen and eating the rest. We stopped the car to take in this unusual scene, as judging by its horns, this ram had been around for longer than most. But as we made eye contact, I saw that this exile was not man-made but self-imposed, as this was Ares, and the barren field was his dancing floor, and I was standing on it.
