An Act of Faith
An Exhibition of Contemporary Ceramics
This curated show of contemporary South African ceramics celebrates the alchemy of objects made from clay – dug from the earth, formed by the hand, and transfigured by fire. While the artist (part chemist, part magician) may direct the elemental processes, ceramics are transformative at every stage of the process.
Clay carries within it time, power and potential. It documents the physicality of touch, but is also subject to forces beyond the will or control of its maker. The unpredictability of the material echoes the instability of the world around us, but each ritual of creation also performs hope by taking a risk; an act of faith.
