The work of Claude Biangani, aka Effo Munguanzo, includes a variety of mediums ranging from painting to working with found objects, mixed media using resin and wood. He is comfortable shifting between 2D and 3D surfaces. Hailing from Kinshasa, Munguanzo’s work is informed by the day-to-day challenges he and his people have faced. Fascinated by the devastating effects of human greed and its impact, his work explores alternative forms of life and urban realities. “I wonder about human survival mechanisms in a continent ravaged by social and economic problems.”

Born in Isiro, Democratic Republic of Congo, Munguanzo currently lives and works in Cape Town, South Africa. After obtaining a State Diploma at the Institut des Beaux Arts in Kinshasa, he went on to complete a Fine Arts degree at the Academie de Beaux Arts in Kinshasa (2006) where he specialised in sculpture. Munguanzo has exhibited in South Africa and in the DRC. He is part of the Sangisa Sangisa Art Collective (a forum for artistic and cultural exchanges). His most recent of several group exhibitions in 2020 included The Nando’s Creative Exchange cohort exhibition In the Making at the AVA Gallery, Slipstream with Gallery De Move On (2022) and Remembrance Gallery curated by the AVA Gallery (2022). Munguanzo has held workshops locally and abroad and has appeared in several publications.
