Vels says: “At nearly 85, I’m, in many ways, shrinking. Eyesight declines, joints stiffen, family and friends die. Yet beauty and wonder leak into every crevice of my life. Despair and tragedy prevail, still I cling to Jeremiah’s text to give hope in the future. It’s the Creator’s great yarn of the everyday story that strings together the links in the smallest cogs of creation that excites me. A leaf, a life, an act of kindness fill me with gratitude and delight to be making these works with thread, stain, water, cloth, paper and clay.”
